November 8 – Overall Website Structure Rethink

Trying to organize our information.  Mainly the home page but also how we handle opportunities (competitions, internships, etc).   And the menu!

Current home page:

  • Slider which shows the top news events.
  • Call to Action to get volunteers involved
  • Upcoming events bar with a link to the full calendar
  • Row in progress that has three things:
    • Call to Action for Opportunities
    • List of club meetings (incomplete)
    • Call to Action to sign up for the newsletter

Need to Add/Change:

  • Is the slider and Upcoming Events bar capturing the most important?

 

SciMaTech Meeting:

  • Review Connect Landing page and discuss notes
  • Club Info:  Need updated dates/times/locations on all clubs – am going to hide that callout for now.

Driven by desire to have more connections for field trips, mentorships, talks, internships, etc.

Outreach Campaign

  • Update Connect With Us
    • to include the form sent out by Ms. McClure.
    • include more pictures
    • messaging?
    • CRM?
  • Plan a Campaign to reach out to students, parents, alumni, community etc.
    • Email – provide email to be forwarded to people we know
    • Facebook/Linked In – provide post template.

Timeline/Internship

Less time intensive but also work on providing information about how to get an internship and the timeline.

  • Internship Info Landing page for students with timeline and explanation.
  • Update Submit an Opportunity was designed to solicit internships and summer jobs.  Needs a title and needs more info about what we are looking for.  Below is the content of an email that we sent last year to the teachers

If possible, we would like to help but getting input from you on what you are looking for and then reaching out to our networks, local social media and other ways to try to find more opportunities for the kids.  Here are some questions off the top of my head about things that might be useful to know as we do this.

  • Fields of interest – all engineering?  Computer Science?  Environmental?  BioMed?
  • Geographical preference – all in DC?  Commutable by Metro?  Virtual?
  • Time frame – are these supposed to be all summer?  Just a few weeks?
  • Workload – looking for 40 hours a week or part time?
  • Compensation – assume that isn’t a factor but check.
  • DCPS Credentials – do companies have to meet any specific criteria to keep DCPS happy.
  • Type of work – assume more then just all scut/busy work?  Are there specific guidelines?
  • Application Process/Vetting – do we let all students apply or should the teachers do any recommending/verifying basic ability to be a good representative of Jackson-Reed.

Tasks for Regina

  • Email roster to me (when you have it).
  • Review the Connect With Us page
  • Review the Have an Opportunity page
  • Decide on our strategy for outreach to community.   Do we make the Connect With Us page our centerpiece?  If they click on providing internship opportunities – do we then email them with more info and a link to the Have An Opportunity page.  If the Connect With Us page is the central landing page – what is our primary goal?  Just to get contacts and then we can follow up on more?

Tasks for Elizabeth

  • Clean up website in short term
    • Move weekly to top
    • Format so lines wrap
    • Add a “keydate” category so certain important dates are highlighted.
  • Set up to upload photos – figure out best way for students, teachers, staff etc to easily upload photos to the site.
  • Meet with Max to discuss email layout – social media links and more.
  • Environmental Club – provide any support.
    • Checking to see if clubs require a Jackson-Reed teacher to lead.
    • Provide help with signup – QR code for posters if requested.
  • Rethink website structure for long term – probably won’t get to this until next week.

June 2022 Meeting Notes

  • Created a basic form for capturing possible internships – if we approve them they will automatically be added to our existing opportunity table.  Denton and Damian (and Eva/Maxwell – at least for now).  I’ll send out a separate email later this week about starting to work on this when y’all have time this summer.
  • Reaching out to Seniors – I created a form to capture where they are going to college and what they are studying, their capstone project info (if relevant) and internship info (if relevant).
    • I’ll be sending out an email tomorrow to our mailing list as long as I don’t hear any objections from all of you.
    • Since there is a post on the website – that will also get pushed out on Sunday.
    • Mr. Ghosh/Ms. Krafft/ Mr. Jacoby/Mr. Meyers – if we don’t get a great response – I may ask you personally to reach out to your seniors who did capstone projects and had internships.
  • Connections – I created an initial form to use to gather contact info.  Too much?  There is also a table that it feeds that we can use to find people.
  • Will keep working on the other action items.
