Student Conservation Association School Year

SCA’s 2022 NACE (National Capital Parks – East) Youth Weekend Ambassador Crew Program will consist of 8 SCA students and two adult Crew Leaders. Over a period of 12 weekend dates throughout September to June 2022-2023, the members will work on projects that create awareness about the Anacostia River Trail, Hiker-Biker Trail, and other park resources. Members will develop new skills through community outreach efforts, such as leading hikes and bike rides on the trail, engaging with other community groups.

There will also be a large educational component to this program as members will gain background knowledge of the National Park Service (NPS), the history of the Civil War Defenses of Washington (CWDW), and Anacostia Parks. Members will learn about the NPS field of Interpretation, natural history, and cultural resources of project areas so that they are able to educate the public about them. Members will be challenged to develop creative and innovative ways to connect their neighborhoods to local NPS trails in SE Washington. Members will also have the opportunity to develop their mountain bike skills on the trail, with the end goal of providing a bike patrol resource to visitors of the parks, sharing information about the park and trails and sharing upcoming programs in the park to the general public.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current high school student, living close to the park (primarily Wards 7 and 8 of Washington DC).
  • Must be able to fully commit to program expectations and participation requirements.
  • Must have some experience riding a bike.

Work Schedule: 9AM – 3PM Saturday and Sunday on selected weekend dates

Pay Rate: Members will make $10/hour for 6 hours per day.
